How to Start a Video Chat

Two Minutes of Setup

Worth doing once. It makes a visible difference and you never have to think about it again.

1. Put a light in front of you — a window or a lamp. Not behind.
2. Get the camera to eye level. Prop the phone on something.
3. Look at what is behind you and move anything you would not want a stranger to see.
4. Put headphones in if you have them. It removes echo entirely.

Starting the Chat

Your browser will ask for camera and microphone permission the first time. Allow both — a one-way conversation ends quickly. If the prompt does not appear or the camera stays black, the permissions guide covers every browser.

What to Say First

The opening line is the whole difference between a conversation and a skip. "Hi" carries no information and invites nothing.

Something true and specific works better: where you are, what time it is for you, what you were doing before you opened this, or an honest reaction to something you can see behind them. Being slightly awkward about it is fine — it is more likeable than a polished line.

Keeping It Going

Ask one open question, listen to the whole answer, then give something back before asking the next one. Question-answer-question with nothing in between turns into an interview within a minute.

Silences are allowed. Filling every one of them reads as nerves.

Ending It

Say something. "This was nice, I am going to move on — take care" costs three seconds and is the only thing separating a normal exit from a rude one.

You never need a reason, and you never owe an explanation.
