Camera and Microphone Permissions: How to Fix Them
Nine times out of ten it is one of two things: the browser permission was denied at some point and is now remembered, or another application is already holding the camera. Close the other app first, then reset the site permission and reload.
Fix It On Your Platform
Chrome and Edge on Desktop
Both use the same controls. Click the icon at the left-hand end of the address bar — a camera, a tune slider or a padlock depending on version — and set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload the page.
If the camera does not appear in that menu at all, the site never got to ask. That usually means a blanket block: open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera, and check that "Sites can ask to use your camera" is on.

Safari on macOS
Safari holds permissions in two places and both have to agree. In Safari, go to Settings → Websites → Camera and set the site to Allow. Then in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, confirm Safari itself is allowed.
The second one is the step people miss. If the operating system has not granted Safari camera access, the site-level setting cannot help.
Firefox on Desktop
Click the padlock in the address bar and clear any blocked camera or microphone permission, then reload. If you ticked "Remember this decision" when denying, that is what is still in effect.
iPhone and iPad
Settings → Safari → Camera, and set to Ask or Allow. Then check Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and make sure your browser is enabled there too.
If you are using Chrome on iOS, check Settings → Chrome → Camera as well — iOS keeps per-app permissions separate.
Android
In Chrome, tap the icon to the left of the address bar → Permissions → Camera → Allow. If it is greyed out, the permission is blocked at the system level: Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Camera.
When Permissions Are Not the Problem
If the browser says the camera is allowed and you still get a black frame, something else has it. Only one application can use a camera at a time on most systems.
- Close video call apps running in the background — that is the usual culprit.
- Close other browser tabs that have already asked for the camera.
- On a laptop, check the physical privacy shutter or switch.
- Restart the browser completely. Reloading the tab is not the same thing.
- If your device has several cameras, check the app is using the one you expect.
A Note on Privacy
Granting camera access to a site lets it use the camera while you are on that page and have started a session. It does not give it access when the tab is closed, and revoking it takes the same two clicks as granting it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my camera not working in the browser?
Usually a remembered permission denial or another app holding the camera. Close other video apps, then reset the site permission and reload.
How do I allow camera access in Chrome?
Click the icon at the left of the address bar, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.
Why does Safari still block my camera after I allowed it?
Safari needs permission at both the site level and in macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Both have to be granted.
Can I use video chat without a microphone?
Technically yes, but a one-way conversation is a short one. Headphones with a built-in mic solve it cheaply.
Does allowing camera access mean a site can watch me?
No. Access applies while you are on the page in an active session, and you can revoke it at any time.
